Impact Risk Assessment Protocol

PLNTmatter Annual Risk Assessment Protocol

📅 Version: Draft 1.0

Effective Date: January 1st 2025
Policy Owner: SVP Product and Strategic Growth
Review Cycle: Annually

1. Purpose

This protocol outlines the procedures for conducting PLNTmatter’s annual sustainability-related risk assessment. The goal is to ensure that emerging environmental, social, and operational risks are identified, measured, and addressed through data-informed strategies and cross-functional collaboration.

2. Scope

The risk assessment applies to:

  • All materials and feedstock used in fiber production

  • Manufacturing processes and associated environmental impacts

  • Social and human rights risks in the value chain

  • Regulatory and reputational risk related to product claims and sourcing practices

3. Methodology Overview

The risk assessment process combines:

  • Internal monitoring (supply chain, manufacturing, impact KPIs)

  • Third-party assessments (e.g., BCOME LCA, certification audits)

  • Stakeholder input (farmers, factory managers, NGOs, customers)

  • Global frameworks (REACH, ZDHC, Just Transition, SDGs)

Risk categories are scored using qualitative and quantitative data and ranked as High, Medium, or Low. Supporting documentation includes:

  • Material traceability data

  • Certification and audit findings

  • LCA datasets (including BCOME methodology v1.6)

  • Incident and grievance logs

4. Risk Review Process

4.1 Annual Review Cycle

  • Q1: Collect latest data from internal teams, supply chain partners, and third-party platforms

  • Q2: Update risk rating matrix and review with Product, Operations, and Sustainability teams

  • Q3: Validate findings with leadership and external advisors (as needed)

  • Q4: Publish revised risk map with supporting narrative in Impact Report or internal dashboard

4.2 Risk Criteria

Each risk is evaluated based on:

  • Likelihood of occurrence

  • Severity of impact (environmental, social, financial, reputational)

  • Ability to mitigate/control

  • Compliance risk (regulatory frameworks)

5. Ownership & Accountability

  • The Sustainability & Impact Team is responsible for leading the assessment, with input from:

    • Product Development

    • Supply Chain & Operations

    • QA/Compliance

    • Regional and community partners

  • Final review is conducted by the Executive Leadership Team

6. Transparency & Application

  • Risk findings are used to prioritize innovation, adjust sourcing, and inform R&D investments

  • Summaries are shared with external partners and incorporated into PLNTmatter’s annual public reporting

  • A record of past assessments is maintained to track progress and trend shifts over time
